Isah Ajagutaina Tukala

1905–1977

Isah Ajagutaina Tukala (1905–1977) was an Inuit sculptor and printmaker born in Puvirnituq, Quebec. Ajagutaina created stone sculptures as well as graphic prints using the method of stone engraving.

Selected exhibitions include Eskimo Sculpture exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery,1967; The Swinton Collection of Inuit Art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1983; and Inuit Masterworks: Selections from the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada at McMichael Gallery, 1983. Ajagutaina’s prints were included in the Povungnituk Print Collection annual collection and print catalogue for multiple years between 1964 and 1970.

His work can be found in the collections of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Glenbow Museum, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery among others. His son Kanayuk Tukaluk is also an artist based in Puvirnituq.
